Our laboratory is engaged in research and innovation projects, aiming to develop and advance ideas and expertise with real scientific and, most importantly, social impact. Our main expertise is on conducting advanced energy modeling and simulations for energy systems and deep energy retrofitting technologies based on the passive house principles.

3E–CSP

Energy, Economic and Environmental analysis of a novel Solar Concentrating Power Plant

November 2025 – November 2029

Summary

3E-CSP project investigates in detail a novel concentrated solar power system, which is a beam-down linear Fresnel reflector coupled with a compound parabolic concentrator. The collector utilizes primary segmented mirrors that reflect the solar rays to a secondary hyperbolic reflector which redirects the solar rays into a cavity receiver which is located on the ground.

Energy Waste Solutions through Development of Positive School Buildings as Sustainable, Innovative Hubs for Community Engagement

October 2025 – March 2029

Summary

NEW EPOCH aims at transforming local school buildings into Positive Energy Educational Buildings (PEEBs) through deep energy retrofitting, innovative construction methods, and comprehensive community engagement, via optimized renovation strategies.

DiVIRTUE

Development of Training Schemes with Application of Virtual Reality towards Implementation of Decarbonized New and Existing Buildings

June 2024 – November 2027

Summary

DiVIRTUE aims at creating new construction sector capacities in five countries via digitalization of existing and new training schemes for students and construction professionals. This will be achieved through the development of innovative construction skills’ training materials with application of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technologies.

SIRCULAR

Sustainable and Integrated People Centric Solutions for Building Decarbonization and Circularity

June 2024 – November 2027

Summary

SIRCULAR intends to create digital tools, technological solutions and non-technical services for the decarbonization of the built environment, as well as a ready-to-use methodology for assessing the circularity of a given building capable of evaluating the impact of the developed construction technologies in the demos.

TechUPGRADE

Thermochemical Heat Recovery and Upgrade for Industrial Processes

May 2023 – April 2027

Summary

TechUPGRADE aims to demonstrate and validate an innovative thermochemically operating technology capable of reaching much higher temperature levels, all while maintaining a superior level of safety, cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency compared to competing technologies.

SmartCities 2.0

Interconnected Smart Cities for Greece 2.0

Summary

The project “Interconnected Smart Cities for Greece 2.0” aims to create a universal Internet of Things (IoT) platform that retrieves and visualizes data generated by existing Smart City systems, achieving semantic interoperability between data and services

Pushing the limit of large-scale energy storage: Optimized Combined Cycles CAES

October 2023 – September 2027

Summary

PUSH – CC project aims to tackle key challenges of compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology by enhancing its scalability, efficiency, energy density and commercial viability in Europe

ZHENIT

Zero Waste Heat Vessel towards Relevant Energy Savings also thanks to IT Technologies

June 2022 – November 2025

Summary

ZHENIT aims to develop a strategy to face the need to decarbonize the maritime transportation by using innovative waste heat recovery technologies, to be exploited onboard to reduce pollutants emissions also in hoteling/harbour conditions.
