ZHENIT
Zero Waste Heat Vessel towards Relevant Energy Savings also thanks to IT Technologies
Time Period: June 2022 – November 2025
EU Contribution: 4.384.488,25€
Project description
ZHENIT will promote waste heat recovery (WHR) as a ready-to-implement solution to fully untap ‘on-board WH potential’ to achieve 2030 IMO/EU targets for shipping sector decarbonization. The project will develop and validate WHR solutions and digital tools at different temperature levels for several on-board services like cooling, power and desalination, valorizing heat in diverse vessel processes.
Our contribution
Development and experimental testing of a flexible, fully automated ORC-ejector-integrated heat pump micro-scale prototype for the production of heating, cooling and electricity. The prototype is driven by vessel engine waste heat (>90 deg°C) and is based on the combination of an Organic Rankine Cycle, an ejector cooling cycle and a vapor compression cooling cycle capable of multiple operating modes. Development of a dynamic modelling platform for the techno-economic optimization of the design and sizing of ZHENIT technologies (latent thermal energy storage, isobaric expansion engine, ORC and sorption-desalination chiller) based on typical vessel engine waste heat profiles of cargo and cruise vessels.
